For the first time,
the untold stories of our
brothers, fathers and sons come out of the shadows
into the bright light of downstage centre. Based on
Chris Brickell’s Montana award-winning Mates and
Lovers, a History of Gay New Zealand, the audience
time travels from pre-colonial Aotearoa/New Zealand
to the 21st century with two exceptional performers
(Simon K Leary and Paora Taurima) as their guides.
Alone on stage aided only by two antique chairs,
the actors fush out the fesh and bones of over 50
characters as different as chalk and cheese. Mates
and Lovers is a perfect blend of humour and pathos.
