In our first full year of operation
we achieved the significant
milestone of commencing
funding of clean-up and
restoration projects.

In the past year we were able to
complete our first funding round and
establish our presence to ensure the
health and wellbeing of the Waikato
River is protected and enhanced.
The Authority began its first funding
round at the end of September 2011.
After being oversubscribed with more
than $56 million of applications for $6
million of funding, successful applicants
were divided into two groups; those
receiving funding of under $50,000 and
those over $50,000.
A total of 46 projects were successful,
26 projects in the under $50,000
received just over $800,000 and 20
projects in the over $50,000 category
were allocated more than $4.8 million
by the Authority.
As at 30 June 2012 contracts and
project plans were being completed and
projects were getting underway.
The Waikato River Authority’s first
funding round was also the impetus
for the role of Authority to become
more widely known. We believe
this has helped us make progress in
communicating our establishment and
our work going forward.
A new appointment was made to the
Authority during the year with iwi
appointee Heemi Biddle joining the
