The Waikato Raupatu Claims
Settlement Act 1995 contains
a preamble which sets out the
history and background of the
Raupatu and the claim. Drafted
and agreed by both Waikato and
the Crown, it serves as the official
public record.
Following is the Preamble*,
starting in 1858 when Pootatau
Te Wherowhero was named King
through to 1995 when the Deed
of Settlement was signed and
legislation passed.
