Highlights
Milestones during 2012 – 2013
» The second funding round took place in the past
year with 60 applications seeking $10.4 million
of funding. A funding allocation of $5 million was
made to 30 projects. Considerable planning for an
earlier 3rd funding round was also undertaken.
» Authority Board members Roger Pikia, Peter
Buckley and Alan Livingston were all reconfirmed
as board members for further terms during
the year. Mr Pikia is the iwi appointee for Te
Arawa River Iwi Trust while Messers Buckley and
Livingston are crown appointees.
» The Authority secretariat was further resourced
during the year with the appointment of a Funding
Manager and Financial Controller. The Authority
also took on three interns at various stages during
the year.
» The Authority’s Vision and Strategy was refreshed
for publication.
» The inaugural Waikato River Authority newsletter
Maunga ki Tai was launched and published as a key
means of communicating the work of the Authority.
» The Authority was able to implement robust
monitoring of funded projects during the year
including numerous site visits to clean-up projects.
» The Waikato River Authority board undertook a
comprehensive field trip of the Lower Waikato
River in April 2013 to see first-hand some of the
features and condition of this section of the river.
» Positive news media coverage of the Authority
continued to build during the year including a
major feature in the Waikato Times, video coverage
of car wreck removals from the river by Fairfax for
stuff.co.nz and TV One coverage of the Authority
funded koi carp control project at Lake Waikare.
» The Authority became part of a joint working party
during the past year. The working party is a co-
management group as part of the Waikato Regional
Council’s “Healthy Rivers” Plan Change and
includes the the five Waikato River iwi.
